Time: that slippery, elusive force we all wish we could tame.

For many—especially those with ADHD, managing time can feel like trying to catch water with a sieve. One minute, you think you have plenty of time, and the next, it’s disappeared into the bottomless sea! Enter a great time awareness tool…I like to call these “time coaches”- simple yet genius tools designed to make the passage of time visual and tangible.

What is a ‘Time Coach”?

A time coach is a visual time-tracking tool designed to help users develop a stronger awareness of time. These timers provide a clear, intuitive way to see time passing, making it easier to manage tasks, transitions, and deadlines. They are particularly beneficial for people with ADHD, students, professionals, and anyone who struggles with time blindness.

Unlike traditional clocks, which simply tell the time, a time coach visually represents time as it decreases, making it easier to gauge how much time remains. This makes them perfect for productivity, shifting focus, bedtime routines, and even potty training!

Time coaches are available in various styles, colors, sizes, and features, such as alarm, vibration, or dimming functions. Each is designed to meet specific time-tracking needs. Whether you need a loud alarm for task transitions, a nightlight for bedtime, or a silent version for deep focus, there’s a good chance a time coach exists for everyone.

There are countless ways to use a time coach, each as varied as the designs themselves.

Here are some of my favorite and unexpected ways to use these fantastic time-awareness tools!

1. Boost Productivity at Work

Meet Alex, the Overwhelmed Attorney
Alex is an experienced attorney, but when it came to writing legal briefs, he found himself either racing against the clock in a last-minute panic or spending too much time perfecting every detail. He understood that the task should take about 30 minutes, but without a straightforward way to track time, he continually missed the mark.

Then, he discovered a time coach. By setting the timer for his 30-minute block, he could visually track how much time was left, challenging him to stay focused. The result? More efficient work sessions, fewer late nights, and an on-time brief submission streak that was the envy of his colleagues.

2. Make Potty Training a Game

Little Emma’s Big Achievement
Potty training—a milestone that can be just as stressful for parents as it is for toddlers. Emma, a lively three-year-old, wasn’t quite grasping the concept of regular potty breaks. Her parents decided to gamify the process using a time coach.

They set it for one hour, signaling when it was time to try. Emma loved checking to watch when the hour was up and even started setting the timer at five minutes for her a five-minute “potty break countdown” each time she went. The visual cue and participation in the process made it fun and easy for her to understand when it was potty time. Within weeks, Emma was confidently potty-trained—and her parents finally got a break from diaper duty!

3. Help Students Stay on Track

Turning Time into a Learning Tool
Studying can be difficult for students who don’t know “how long” it should take. This is especially true for those with ADHD. By introducing time coaches into the classroom, students can use visual cues to know how long they need to focus on a task.

For example, during reading time, a teacher sets the timer for 20 minutes so students can see time passing. This helps reduce frustration, ease transitions, and improve focus. In special education settings, where structure and predictability are crucial, time coaches have become game-changers.

4. Turn Chores into a Challenge

The 15-Minute Tidy-Up
Chores—nobody loves them, but they have to be done. To make cleaning more manageable and even fun, families have started using the “15-minute tidy-up” method using a time coach.

Here’s how it works: Set the timer for 15 minutes, and everyone races to see how much they can accomplish before time runs out. It’s like a mini-game that transforms tidying up from a daunting chore into a fun, beat-the-clock challenge!

5. Manage Screen Time Without the Drama

A Visual Approach to Digital Limits
The battle over screen time is real. Instead of constantly nagging, parents are using time coaches to set clear boundaries.

For instance, a 30-minute gaming session is displayed visually, and as the red disk shrinks, kids start to self-regulate their time. The best part? There is less arguing, fewer meltdowns, and smoother transitions from playtime to homework or bedtime.

6. Run Meetings Like a Pro

Keeping Teams Focused and On Time
We’ve all experienced meetings that seem to go on forever. Rather than allowing conversations to meander, companies are now bringing time coaches into the conference rooms to ensure discussions stay focused.

Setting a timer for each agenda item keeps everyone focused, ensures concise presentations, and helps meetings finish on time—or even earlier! Goodbye to time-wasting meetings. Hello to productivity.

7. Enhance Meditation & Mindfulness

A Gentle Guide to Inner Peace
For those who practice meditation or mindfulness, a time coach provides a gentle way to track sessions. Unlike a loud alarm that can interrupt your relaxation, the Time Coach’s gradual countdown offers a soothing method for transitioning in and out of meditation.

Whether you’re managing your own ADHD, supporting your kids, coaching clients, or just trying to outwit your own to-do list, time coaches offer more than structure—they offer freedom. They turn “I lost track of time” into “Look what I accomplished!” and transform chaotic moments into calm, focused flow.

At the iACTcenter, we believe that when time becomes visible, it becomes manageable…
